Your Links Are a Shop Window: Put the Right One First

Most visitors tap one link, usually the first one that looks relevant. How to choose and order the links on your profile so that tap goes where you want.

Think about how you use someone else's profile.

You open it, glance at the photo and the first line, tap one button that looks relevant, and leave. You do not read it top to bottom. Nobody does.

That makes the order of your links one of the most important decisions on your card, and most people make it by accident, in the order they happened to add things.

Start With One Question

What is the one thing you want a stranger to do after meeting you?

  • A consultant wants a booked call.

  • A designer wants someone to see the portfolio.

  • A founder raising money wants the deck requested.

  • A salesperson wants a WhatsApp message.

Whatever your answer is, that link goes first. Not second, not "somewhere near the top". First.

Fewer Links, More Taps

Every extra link competes with the one you care about. Twelve links read as a list to skim; four read as choices to make.

A good profile has three to five links. If you have more, ask of each one: would I be disappointed if this were the only thing someone tapped? If the answer is no, move it lower or hide it.

Your social accounts do not need to be in the list at all. On most profiles, including POPINID, they sit in a row of icons beneath your name, where they are recognised at a glance and do not crowd out the links that matter.

Name Links for What They Do

"Website" tells a visitor nothing. "See our recent projects" tells them what they will get.

A few swaps that help:

  • "Calendar" becomes "Book a 20-minute call"

  • "Portfolio" becomes "Selected work, 2024 to 2026"

  • "WhatsApp" becomes "Message me on WhatsApp"

If you work in both Arabic and English, write each title in the language your visitors will use, or both where space allows. A title in the reader's language gets tapped.

Change the Order for the Occasion

Your card is not a monument. Before an event, move the link that matters for that event to the top: the product you are launching, the talk you are giving, the registration page.

Afterwards, move it back. Two minutes, and every scan that week lands on the right thing.

Let the Numbers Decide

Guessing is where you start. After a few weeks, you do not have to guess.

On POPINID, your dashboard shows how many times each link was tapped over the last 7 days, the last 30 days and all time. Look for three patterns:

  • A lower link beating the top one. Your visitors are telling you what they want. Consider moving it up.

  • A link nobody taps. Rename it, move it, or remove it.

  • Plenty of profile views, very few taps. People are arriving and finding nothing to press. Your first link or its title needs work.

A Ten-Minute Tidy

  1. Write down the one action you want.

  2. Put that link first.

  3. Cut the list to five or fewer.

  4. Rename each link for what it does.

  5. Check the numbers in a month and adjust.

On POPINID, links reorder by dragging, and any link can be hidden without being deleted, so trying a new order costs nothing.

Set up your links.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many links should my profile have?
Three to five is a good range. Every extra link competes with the one you most want tapped.
Which link should go first?
The link for the single action you most want a stranger to take after meeting you, whether that is booking a call, seeing your portfolio or sending a message.
Should social media accounts be in my link list?
Usually not. On POPINID they appear as a row of icons under your name, which keeps the main list free for the links that matter.
How do I know which links people actually use?
Check your link click counts. POPINID shows taps per link over the last 7 days, 30 days and all time, so you can reorder based on what visitors really do.
